You can import a parrot.
You cannot import a clownfish.
Bird species and freshwater fish can legally enter the Maldives. Saltwater fish and coral cannot. Local reef collection is banned too. The result: there is currently no legal source of livestock for the saltwater hobby in the Maldives.

About the association
A hobby regulated out of existence
Maldivian Reefers Association is a registered non-profit association under the Associations Act, Law No. 3/2022, based in Hulhumale', Republic of Maldives.
Our position is narrow and specific. Other animal hobbies in the Maldives have a legal pathway: birds and freshwater fish can be imported under existing rules. Saltwater fish and coral cannot be imported at all, and collecting from local reefs is also prohibited by the authorities.
With both routes closed, there is no lawful way to keep a marine aquarium here. We are not campaigning for the removal of rules. We are campaigning for the existence of rules — permits, inspection, quotas, traceability — instead of a blanket ban.
Status readout · livestock access
Net effect: no legal source of livestock exists for the saltwater aquarium hobby in the Maldives.
What we advocate for
01
Fair regulation, not no rules
We are not asking for an open door. We are asking for a permitted, inspected, quota-based pathway — the same kind of framework other animal hobbies already operate under.
02
Equal opportunity across hobbies
Birds and freshwater fish can be legally imported. Saltwater livestock cannot. That disparity has no stated conservation rationale that applies only to reef species in captivity.
03
Captive husbandry as conservation
Aquacultured coral and captive-bred fish reduce pressure on wild reefs. A legal channel makes farmed livestock possible; a blanket ban makes everything impossible.
04
A community with a record
Documented tanks, documented sourcing, documented practice. A hobby that keeps records is a hobby regulators can work with.
